The City of Union, KY strongly opposes Senate Bill 50 and its twin bill in the House of Representatives, HB50. If passed, SB50 and HB50 would require local municipalities to hold partisan primaries in the spring of their election cycle. This would require incumbents and candidates to declare their party affiliation in order to participate in their primary. Nationally, partisan politics has divided this nation and made constructive conversation and collaboration almost impossible. Locally, maintaining a non- partisan legislative body allows leaders to have discourse about sometimes sensitive and difficult issues without fear of retribution or censure from their party. It is imperative that local municipalities maintain this neutrality for freedom of thought and expression.
