Project Background The Union Pocket Park project aims to create a vibrant, accessible, and inclusive community space that fosters public gatherings, celebrates Union’s creative identity, and beautifies unused road project spaces that would otherwise be small, empty lots within the city. The parks are envisioned to be welcoming, functional, and resilient for all community members, with a future design focused on sustainability and low maintenance. Most of these spaces are leftover from the Mt. Zion Road expansion project and Kentucky donated the land to Union for this project.
What is a Pocket Park?
A pocket park is a small, public green space—often no larger than a single vacant lot—designed to provide recreation, relaxation, and social interaction in urban or suburban settings. These parks are typically integrated into neighborhoods, downtown areas, or underutilized spaces, offering features like benches, landscaping, shade, public art, or minimal structures.
The project includes:
Cardinal Park (Park 1)
Location: NW corner of Sycamore Dr. & Mt. Zion Rd (Completion Aug 2025, thanks to a grant from Duke Energy for benches)
Sparrow Park (Park 2)
Location: Indian Hill Dr. & Mt. Zion Rd. (continued addition of plants over years, thanks to a grant from NKY Master Gardeners Association).
Goldfinch Park (Park 3)
Location: South side of Mt. Zion Rd between Russwill Ln. and Union Rice Cemetery. (Several young trees have been added, TBD on future design and funding).
Bluebird Park (Park 4)
