FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I really live in the City of Union?

A common question is – My address is Union, therefore I live in the city, right?  Well, maybe.  The United States Postal Service sets mailing addresses, and they have a larger geographical designation for “Union” than the city limits.  The physical city limits of the City are smaller than the postal designation for Union. For reference, please see the current city map available at City of Union Boundary Map

How Should I Prepare For Winter Weather (Snow & Ice)?

When weather forecasts predict snow and/or ice, the City of Union asks residents to take the following steps to help keep our roads safe and clear. By taking these simple steps, residents help Union maintain safer roads and improve response time during winter events.

  • Park vehicles off-street: Streets that are free of parked vehicles allow snowplows and salt trucks to operate more efficiently and safely.
  • Plan ahead: Monitor local weather forecasts and city alerts so you can move vehicles before conditions worsen.
  • Use caution when traveling: Avoid unnecessary travel during snow and ice events, and give snowplows plenty of space when on the road.

    Snow Event FAQs

    • Teams continue plowing and salting our streets. We go out and verify the teams’ status every 2-3 hours during a snow event to ensure all streets are treated.
    • We have over 120 streets to plow thus it takes over 10 hours to clear the city assuming ideal conditions (snow 3-5” at most, cars not parked on streets, etc).
    • Priority goes towards our most populated areas; unfortunately, we can’t be in every subdivision at once.
    • The city did build a temporary salt depot that was completed in October; this reduces the time our plow trucks take to refill on salt.
    • Note: the city does not plow US42, Mt. Zion Rd, Gunpowder, Frogtown, Rice Pike, Villas of Fowlers Creek (private), Affinity apartments (private).

My mailbox is blocked by snow.

Sorry about this but the priority is to enable vehicle traffic on our streets to allow for fire/EMS/sheriff accessibility. Mailbox clearing is a resident responsibility (if you choose to clear it).

My mailbox was knocked over by a snow plow.

Apologize for this happening. What is your address? We will have our public works team assess the damage as soon as we can. Once we get someone to look at it, we can determine how to correct the situation.

    My subdivision isn’t cleared/my road isn’t plowed.

Sorry that we haven’t reached your street yet; teams are out in several subdivisions currently and we hope to get to your street soon.

The plow trucks blocked my property/driveway with snow.

Unfortunately, to clear the streets, the plow trucks cannot lift the blade at every driveway entrance; this would be very inefficient and result in a poorly cleared road. Clearing one’s driveway access is a resident responsibility.
